Eyes
Lack of sleep, nasal congestion, dehydration, or allergies can all contribute to dark circles or puffy, under-eye bags. Those conditions can normally be remedied with a good night’s sleep and lots of water, allergy treatments to lessen sinus problems, or a cold compress to help the vessels in the area constrict. But a more permanent state of dark circles or the “hollowed out” look of sunken eyes, whether from collagen and elastin loss or genetics, can be treated.
Texture
Skin texture refers to the look, touch, and feel of your skin. Everyone falls on a spectrum, from smooth and velvety to rough or grainy. Basic skincare — including cleansing, moisturizing, sunscreen, and exfoliation — along with limiting sun exposure, a healthy diet, and not smoking, are the cornerstones to keeping and maintaining a youthful-looking texture. But that isn’t always enough. Dry skin, acne, eczema, and enlarged pores aren’t always conditions that can be avoided or easily treated.

Age Spots
Known by various terms — age spots, sunspots, solar lentigines, or liver spots (even if they have nothing to do with the liver!) — these spots can range from tan or light brown to dark brown in color. They are generally flat and oval and can group together. This pigmentation or discoloration may begin to occur in your twenties, but it tends to be more pronounced by your fifties. And while age spots tend to show more on lighter skin tones, they aren’t exclusive to those with fair skin.
Double Chin
A double chin, a fatty layer under the chin known as submental fat, is a common condition. It might develop due to weight gain, as part of the natural aging process due to looser skin, or a combination of both. Often it is plain old genetics. If your mom or dad or great Aunt Sally has it, you might, too.

Sagging Skin
The one place on their bodies where most people don’t like to lose fat is on their face. There are several ways that loss of fat, or elasticity, shows up. While sunken cheeks, or a gaunt face, can be an indication of a serious health condition, more often than not that “hollowness” which draws in the cheeks — as well as loss of volume around the eyes — is normally a natural sign of aging, alongside genetic predispositions and weight fluctuations. But it isn’t the only way that sagging skin shows up.
Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Age, smoking, and sun exposure cause collagen in the skin to decline and deteriorate over the years, resulting in a thin dermis, a lack of elasticity, and, ultimately, wrinkles and fine lines. On the face, these lines tend to appear first on the forehead and around the mouth and eyes. While avoiding the sun and not smoking, along with a faithful skincare routine with a good moisturizer — at Naya we are huge fans of the Epionce skincare line, which we offer at the spa — is paramount, wrinkles are part of the aging process that is difficult to top.

Acne Scarring
Often leftover from youth – whether genetic or from picking or squeezing the affected area – acne can leave scars or hyperpigmentation due to inflammation. During acne’s healing process, the body produces collagen. If the body produces too little or too much collagen, the skin will scar with depressions or pits or with raised acne scars.
Painful Intercourse & Urinary Incontinence
One in five women reported vulvar pain or discomfort during sex in the previous 30 days. But those numbers for women in menopause are even higher. The North American Menopause Society says between 17 and 45% of postmenopausal women say they find sex painful. This is caused by falling estrogen levels, which can result in dryness and the thinning of vaginal tissues and, ultimately, pain with intercourse.

Rosacea & Hyperpigmentation
A common chronic skin condition, rosacea manifests in facial redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, or acne-like breakouts. It mainly affects people in middle age or women in menopause. But the cause of rosacea is unknown. According to the National Rosacea Society, the condition afflicts over 16 million Americans.
Spider Veins
Spider veins are tiny veins that appear just below the surface of the skin, normally on the legs, ankles, and calves. They are a milder type of varicose veins and appear as red, blue, or purple spider web-shaped discolorations. These and are more common in women than women. While these can be hereditary, they are often related to pregnancy or weight gain, older age, inactivity, smoking, and have also been linked to birth control pills or hormone replacement.

Hair Loss
While a COVID-19 infection itself might have been the cause for some of us to lose our hair, apparently the sheer pandemic trauma was enough to cause some of our bodies to push as much as 70% of our hair into the “telogen” phase of its growth cycle, stopping hair growth. But for others, hair loss has been a problem – and will continue to be – with or without the pandemic. There are many culprits: pregnancy, changing hormones, heredity, chronic illness, nutritional deficiency, and certain medications.
